Birmingham announced the appointment of the 70-year-old Redknapp on Tuesday, a day after the resignation of Gianfranco Zola.

Redknapp has been involved in football since 1958, and has managed Bournemouth, West Ham, Southampton, Tottenham, QPR and Jordan, and has also taken in two stints at Portsmouth, where he won the FA Cup.

Birmingham now sit three points above the relegation zone ahead of fixtures with Aston Villa, Huddersfield Town and Bristol City respectively.

Harry Redknapp admits he is "going in blind" as the new Birmingham City manager as he has not watched them play this season.

Zola left the Blues after just four months in charge and having claimed just two wins from 24 games.

"It's a real challenge, " said Redknapp. I am sorry because I came to Birmingham with huge expectations.

More recently, Redknapp was briefly in charge of Jordan for two World Cup qualifiers a year ago and was also working as an advisor to Derby County last season.

Last year, the police department tweeted a picture of snacks underneath a trap, which also went viral. The department's tweet has been retweeted more than 50,000 times and liked more than 80,000 times.

Redknapp's brief does not now extend beyond securing Birmingham's second-tier survival but if he can achieve that aim, he could be convinced to remain in charge for a crack at promotion to the Premier League.

'I got a phone call last night from the people at Birmingham, ' the former Tottenham manager said.

"I am going to live up there until the end of the season".

The club are 20th in the Championship table, three points above the relegation zone, and Redknapp told a news conference: "It was something I thought I'll have a go at".

"They chant and say they want me out". All I can do is try and install a bit of confidence in them, and a bit of belief.

Redknapp will work for free until the end of the season at which point the club will review their progress and potentially open up discussions over a permanent deal. It is not that I like quitting but I feel like this club deserves the best chance. If I feel I can't help the team it is better that I leave someone else to do that.
