The United States on Friday threatened to take further military action in Syria following its missile strikes on an air base in the war-wracked country in retaliation for a suspected chemical attack.
In a letter addressed to House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate president pro tempore Orrin Hatch, Trump gave details on the missile strike on the Shayrat military airfield.
"We are prepared to do more", he said.
The US and United Kingdom have blamed Russia for being complicit in the horrific deaths of innocent Syrians in last week's chemical attack and the federation is facing the threat of fresh global sanctions over its support for the dictator.
The Syrian regime denies that it carried out the nerve agent gas attack in Idlib.
Trump wrote that he "acted in the vital national security and foreign policy interests of the United States, pursuant to my constitutional authority to conduct foreign relations and as commander in chief and chief executive".
"The entire administration was in agreement that this was something that had to be done", Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said on NBC's "Meet the Press".
"If this intervention is limited only to an air base, if it does not continue and if we don't remove the regime from heading Syria, then this would remain a cosmetic intervention", said Cavusoglu in the southern city of Antalya.

President Donald Trump's national security adviser is describing USA goals to defeat the Islamic State group as well as oust Syrian President Bashar Assad (bah-SHAR' AH'-sahd) as somewhat "simultaneous".
The Syrian opposition has reported that Assad's forces have begun flying again from an air base struck last week by US missiles, and Graham says Assad is telling Trump - "F. you' - by resuming those flights".
Pressed to clarify, McMaster said the goals of fighting IS and ousting Syria's president were somewhat "simultaneous" and that the objective of the missile strike was to send a "strong political message to Assad" to stop using chemical weapons.
The US retaliatory strike marked the first time the United States has intervened directly in the Syrian civil war against Assad's Russian- and Iranian-backed regime, raising questions about Washington's next steps.
The Turkish foreign minister, whose country is a strong backer of the Syrian opposition, said the USA missile strikes were not enough. "If you look at his actions, if you look at the situation, it's going to be hard to see a government that's peaceful and stable with Assad". But he said Trump now needed to work with Congress to set a future course. "So, yes, I'm skeptical", she said.
Meanwhile, senior Pentagon officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told reporters Friday that they were investigating possible Russian "complicity" in the alleged chemical attack, indicating that the U.S. military command is looking to ratchet up the confrontation with Moscow.
"Don't you believe Bashar al-Assad bears any responsibility for the horrific deaths that have occurred in his own country?" Earlier, U.S. military officials had said they were looking into whether Russian Federation participated, possibly by using a drone to help eliminate evidence afterward. Still, Haley said the USA didn't see a peaceful future for Syria with Assad in power.
