Its extension follows the approval by Turkish voters of constitutional changes boosting Erdogan's powers on Sunday.
The narrowness of the victory has raised doubts.
What's the fallout of the vote? Turkish opposition figures have already demanded the vote be annulled. "They shouldn't try, it will be in vain", he said.
Many "No" voters saw the referendum as a power-hungry leader's attempt to cement his position.
Meanwhile, flag-waving supporters of Erdogan celebrated as their President praised them for their "historic decision" that could keep him in office until 2029. The two men spoke frequently during the start of Obama's tenure.
Erdogan rejected criticism from global monitors who said he had been favoured by an "unequal campaign". He also said the decision of the YSK election board to accept unstamped ballots was clearly against the law. Prior to this vote, Turkish authorities had required that the only ballots that could be tallied were those in officially stamped envelopes.
Erdogan said Turkey could hold a referendum on the membership bid.
Turkey's National Security Council is recommending an extension to the state of emergency, declared following a failed coup last summer. But the changes will see the post of prime minister abolished, and most of those powers will be handed to the president.
That drew a harsh rebuke from Erdogan and criticism from Prime Minister Binali Yildirim. Turkey seems to be heading into turbulent times. However, the Turkish Parliament will not control details of spending or have a say over presidential appointments. It will be up to the courts to decide whether a decree is legally valid.

While not involved in the incident with Dao at O'Hare, the Chicago PD has also been criticized for how it reacted. Munoz apologized on Tuesday, calling the episode "truly horrific", and pledged a full review by April 30.
The president would be limited to two five-year terms, with the option of a third term in case of early elections.
The Supreme Court will also change - there are now 22 Supreme Court judges, four of whom are appointed by the president. Erdogan's increased power would grant him even more leverage over EU policies, by allowing him to threaten to open the refugee floodgate on the European continent.
Where does the opposition go from here?
This comes after Turkey's principal opposition parties including Republican People's Party (CHP) has demanded recounting of almost 60% of the votes. "We finally need some honesty in the relationship between the European Union and Turkey", said Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz, adding the bloc should instead work on a "partnership agreement".Gabriel said during a visit to Albania that too many people in Europe, some for reasons related to domestic policy, would now urge a rigorous attitude towards Ankara and call for an end to talks but he said he wanted to find "new formats for talks instead because Turkey is still our neighbour".Turkey has been on a decades-long quest to join the EU.
Opposition CHP head Kemal Kilicdaroglu accused the electoral board of bias and of favoring the governing party. They can do this within the period until the final official results are published by the YSK in the next 10 days.
If the opposition is not happy with the board's response to its objections, it can then file an appeal to the Constitutional Court.
The CHP plan to challenge the legality of the referendum at the European Court of Human Rights.
