In another Gallup poll from earlier that year, before the Assad regime's chemical weapons attack, 68% of Americans said they opposed military action to end the Syrian conflict even if "all economic and diplomatic efforts fail".

More than 80 people were killed in what the USA has described as a nerve gas attack that Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces undoubtedly carried out.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer on Wednesday said that the president was not ruling out another attack on Syrian government installations if Assad continued to use chemical weapons against civilians.

Russian Federation has repeatedly called for an independent investigation of the incident, which it says resulted from a Syrian government airstrike on a terrorist chemical weapons storehouse.

Moscow, Tehran and Damascus will continue jointly fighting terrorism in Syria, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem said after talks with his Russian and Iranian counterparts in Moscow on Friday, TASS reports.

Beyond Syria, Russia's alleged meddling in the USA presidential election also hovered over what was the first face-to-face encounter between Putin and any Trump administration Cabinet member.

A State Department official, who asked not to be identified, said later that the discussions centered around Syria and North Korea, with the two sides able to agree on a couple of principles: they both want a denuclearized Korean peninsula, and a unified Syria.

The Kremlin had previously declined to confirm Putin would meet Tillerson, reflecting the renewed tension.

China typically sides with Russian Federation in the Security Council, including in opposing US -backed measures to punish Syria for its use of chemical weapons.

However, analysts say the civil war in Syria has driven a wedge between Moscow and Washington. US spending, too, has tapered off in recent years.

"That's a butcher. That's a butcher", Trump said of Assad.

However, Lavrov added some progress had been made on Syria at the meeting, adding that a working group would be set up to examine the poor state of US-Russia ties.

"We may be at an all-time low in terms of our relationship with Russian Federation", he said.

Tillerson says the United State is confident in its assessment that Syria used chemical weapons in a bombing last week and alleged that Syria has used such weapons more than 50 times in the past.

The civil war is separate from the USA -led effort against the Islamic State group in the north of the country.

For Trump, it's a dramatic reversal from his repeated campaign pledges to forge a new U.S. I'm sure she said: 'Listen, this is terrible stuff'.

"It's fundamentally important not to let these actions happen again in the future", Lavrov said.
