Federer enjoyed two successful challenges late in the game to sending the crowd wild as he won the Australian.
Federer was in sublime form against Nadal in Miami as he dispatched the Spaniard in an hour and 34 minutes.
"For me basically the second half of the season is the big priority which is why I am taking this break now", he said.
"When I came to Miami, I just thought, like I did in Indian Wells and Australia, I thought, 'Ah, this is probably not going to work, eventually it's just going to catch up with me, ' " Federer said.
Brilliant. Federer also confirmed after his win that he won't be playing any clay court events during the clay season apart from Roland Garros.
"It has been a good start to the season for me even if I have now lost to Roger three times!" The French Open I guess, to some extent, we will see what happens, no pressure there really.
Federer moves up to fourth in the world, as he continues on his dream of returning to the very top in the world.
'When I'm healthy and I'm feeling good, I can produce tennis like this.
Of his grand slam titles, 10 have come on hard court (five Australian Opens and five US Opens), seven on grass at Wimbledon and just one on clay, the 2009 French Open.

Adam Stump, a Pentagon spokesman, said the MOAB had been brought to Afghanistan "some time ago" for potential use. The US has concentrated heavily on combatting them while also supporting Afghan forces battling the Taliban.
The set continued in a similar fashion, with Nadal unable to convert any of his four break points, until the Swiss drew first blood, on his sixth break point of the match, before serving the opener out.
The Spaniard has also never won the Miami Open in 12 previous appearances, including four trips to the final, and Federer can not quite figure out why. I need rest, my body needs healing and I need time as well to prepare.
"What a start to the year".
"It was more of a fight mode I was in, just trying to stay afloat".
He also sent the Spaniard out a fortnight ago in early Indian Wells rounds before polishing his season record at Crandon Park.
"Every three years I am here in this position but always with the smaller trophy", he observed.
Despite a few edgy moments in the second, the 35-year-old always appeared in control and forced the crucial break at 4-4 before again holding his serve to seal the title.
"In 2005 when I beat you very lucky here in the final I told you you were going to win this tournament and I truly believe you are still going to win this tournament".
