Rakhmat Akilov, a 39-year-old man from Uzbekistan accused of killing four people in Stockholm last week by driving a hijacked truck into a crowd of people, has admitted committing an act of terrorism, according to his lawyer.
Swedish police have arrested an Uzbek native in connection to Friday's deadly terrorist truck attack in Stockholm.
People were killed when a truck crashed into the department store Ahlens on Drottninggatan, in central Stockholm, on Friday.
The lawyer of one of two Stockholm truck attack suspects on Tuesday said thatRakhmat Akilov has admitted to his crime in front of a Swedish court.
After two years of saying nothing about the floodgates being opened for mass immigration into Sweden, Prime Minister Stefan Lofven was essentially forced to speak up after last week's terror attack, in which four people were killed and 15 others were injured.
"We want to give the police the opportunity, without concrete suspicion of a crime, to go into workplaces to make sure that people who work there are in Sweden [legally]", he added.
Security services said he had expressed sympathies with extremist organisations, among them Islamic State, but had not viewed him as a militant threat.
Mr Akilov reportedly ran from the scene of the attack, still covered in blood and glass, and was arrested hours later in a northern suburb of Stockholm.

He did not share the faith of one and a half billion Muslims, living in peace around the world. She also called on other girls from her home country to make their voices heard.
Police said a second man arrested over the attack would face no charges but is set to be deported.
According to court documents Akilov had asked for his defence lawyer to be replaced by a Sunni Muslim, but his request had been denied.
The motive of Friday's attack remains unknown, but the method resembled previous rampages using vehicles in Nice, Berlin and London, all of them claimed by ISIS.
After Eriksson's statement, the judge consented to the prosecution's request to have the rest of the hearing held behind closed doors due to the classified nature of the information in the investigation. The head of the National Police, Dan Eliasson, said that the suspect had been known to police.
A nation of 10 million, Sweden took in 244,000 asylum seekers in 2014 and 2015, more per capita than any other country in Europe.
He told reporters during a visit to western Sweden that, "Sweden has been attacked".
The suspect has confessed to the crime and said he was "pleased with what he had done", the Aftonbladet and Expressen dailies reported.
