Vice President Pence abruptly canceled a scheduled event in New Hampshire on Tuesday but his spokeswoman said there is "no cause for alarm".
The White House has stayed mum on why Pence was called back to the White House, declining to elaborate at all on the reason for the change of plans.
She later added, "The @VP never left Washington, DC".
Air Force Two reportedly was turned around, with several media outlets citing an undisclosed emergency.
"Something came up that required the vice president to remain in D.C. There is no cause for concern".
"There's been an emergency callback".

CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller reports that officials are not offering more details about the cancellation, but say it's "not health related to the Pres or VP or national security related".
His chief of staff, Marc Short, told ABC News Pence got on the plane at Joint Base Andrews, and was called back before the plane was ready to take off but he would not specify why. "We'll reschedule NH shortly".
The plane of the U.S. vice president had been scheduled to land in Manchester, New Hampshire at around 11:25 am (15:40 GMT).
The VP was on his way to an event in New Hampshire and that event has been cancelled. "I don't recall that they used the word 'emergency 'or 'crisis, '" he said.
Pence was previously slated to travel to Manchester, N.H., to meet with former patients and alumni of the Granite Recovery Center at its headquarters, and deliver remarks on America's opioid epidemic.
