Against the wishes of pretty much everyone involved in education, the Republican-controlled Florida Legislature this week passed a bill that would allow teachers to carry guns in the classroom.
With pressure coming from Governor Ron DeSantis, who promised supporters he would ban so-called sanctuary cities, Republican leaders in both chambers are scrambling to pass a plan before the session ends this week. It's an expansion of the state's guardian program, and would allow a teacher to volunteer to carry a gun if their local school district gives the OK.
"It allows the good guys to stop the bad". Many do not. As NPR member station WLRN reports, most of Florida's school districts have declined to create guardian programs, opting instead to put law enforcement officers in each school. "There are bad police officers and there are bad teachers".
"Here in Florida, we look after our first responders and I am honored to sign this bill to help ensure our firefighters who are battling cancer have the tools and benefits they need", said DeSantis. Even the governor's hand-picked Broward sheriff appointee, Gregory Tony, is against the idea: On Wednesday, he sent a letter to Runcie and the Broward school board saying he's anxious that arming teachers is "likely to create a tragic scenario where innocent people can get injured or killed".

Public schools' main account would get $783 million more than past year.
"The Broward County School Board voted on a resolution against arming teachers in March 2018", Robert Runcie said in a statement to the Herald.
As a result of the school massacre in the U.S. state of Florida a year ago, with 17 dead, a teacher should be allowed to wear in the future, weapons. The ultimate decision for each school, however, will be made at county level.
Suffice it to say that most law enforcement officers, public officials, educators, teachers, parents, and students - particularly here in South Florida - believe that arming teachers is pure folly.
