Some of Notre Dame's remaining statues were removed by crane before the tarpaulins were hoisted up and workers began dragging them over to cover vulnerable parts of the structure in the afternoon.
Some workers told police they had sometimes smoked on the scaffolding, a spokesman for the company, Le Bras Freres, told Reuters.
After picking up seven cigarette butts following the fire, police questioned roof workers for the construction firm whose staff admitted to having violated strict no-smoking rules.

Officials believe the fire was accidental, possibly caused by a short circuit linked to renovation work underway before the fire.
French President Emmanuel Macron has set a goal of rebuilding the cathedral in just five years -which some experts consider simply impossible to reach. Multiple cranes are positioned around the site, as the French president pushes for a speedy reconstruction after the fire consumed the cathedral's roof and knocked down its spire.
