Baumel, who was born in the United States in 1960 but immigrated to Israel, had been missing since what is known as the Battle of Sultan Yacoub in a Lebanese village of the same name near the Syrian border.
Israel has recovered the body of US-born Israeli soldier, who had gone missing since a 1982 battle with Syrian forces during its invasion of Lebanon.
IDF spokesman Ronen Manlis said in a statement that two IDF chiefs of staff and the last two military intelligence heads were involved in the repatriation, as well as officials from military intelligence, research and operations, the Israel Security Agency and the Mossad.
Conricus declined to elaborate on how the return was arranged or where the remains were found, saying only that "an opportunity arose to locate the body" through an unnamed country. "We hope and pray that all the remaining missing will be returned home to their rightful places in the land of Israel".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in his eulogy for Baumel at a military cemetary in Jerusalem, thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for his help.

Baumel was buried later Thursday at a military cemetery in Jerusalem. One of the unit's tanks was also captured by Syrian forces and brought back to the country as a trophy.

According to the IDF, the remains of Baumel, Feldman and Katz were believed to be in the control of the Palestine Liberation Organization in Syria. The Israeli media reported that Russian Federation was involved in the retrieval of the remains, though it was not officially confirmed.
