Samantha Josephson, a senior, got separated from her roommates during a night out in Columbia, South Carolina. "Skip" Holbrook said during a news conference. Turkey hunters found her body 14 hours later about 90 miles from where she was last seen.
Josephson's cause of death was "due to multiple sharp force injuries", Clarendon County Coroner Bucky Mock said. "And if they don't know the answer, my suggestion would be to call for a different ride", Deric Swenson with Moorhead Police said.
"Our hearts are broken. There is nothing tougher than to stand before a family and explain how a loved one was murdered", the chief said.
"I just think it's pretty unfortunate people need to make sure they are going into the right vehicle", Rhodes said.
Nathaniel David Rowland, 24, has been arrested and charged with kidnapping and murder after officers spotted a vehicle matching the description of the auto Josephson had gotten into early Saturday morning and pulled him over during a traffic stop.
Rowland is being held without bail in a Columbia, South Carolina jail. CNN has not determined if he has a lawyer yet.
After initially fleeing from officers on foot, Rowland was arrested and is now being held on charges of murder and kidnapping. Rowland tried to flee on foot but was caught by police.
"What I try to do every time is verify whoever gets in the vehicle".

German plane crash kills one of Russia's richest women
As the co-owner of the Russia's major S7 Group , Fileva was one of the country's richest women, according to the BBC . The company's employees will always remember Natalia Valeryevna as a bright, caring leader and a wonderful person.
Holbrook described how the case came together quickly. They called the police on 1:30 p.m. Friday. It was identified as Josephson's.
Lawmakers in SC plan to introduce legislation to require ride-share vehicles to display illuminated signs in the wake of the death of a USC student who got into a vehicle she believed was her Uber.
According to investigators, Josephson got into a vehicle thinking it was an Uber, but it was not. A child safety seat was also found in the back seat and the child safety door locks were locked.
The first dark vehicle Josephson went up to was not her ride, said her father, Seymour Josephson.
The homicide investigation is ongoing, Holbrook said. Fielding Pringle, his public defender, declined to comment. Riders should also check the vehicle's license plate, make and model and compare the picture to the person behind the wheel.
Since Josephson's death, Columbia Police placed fliers with safety tips for ride-share and taxi rides onto the windows of businesses in the city.
It is with tremendous sadness and of a broken heart that I post this! I cannot fathom how someone could randomly select a person, a lovely girl, and steal her life away. Samantha was by herself - she had absolutely no chance. "I will miss and love my baby girl for the rest of life", he wrote. Whether it means walking through a bloody police shooting to help a family find justice or showing the multifaceted talent of the Black Diaspora I write the news. "Look for that, and always make sure I am looking for the Uber or Lyft sign", Missy Rhodes, who uses both Uber and Lyft, said.
Josephson was due to graduate this year with a degree in political science.
