Should Northam still be in office by Tuesday night, it could find its way into President Donald Trump's State of the Union address, which wouldn't bode well for Democrats, who would most likely stand up to applaud the president if he has to call for Northam's resignation.
Gov. Ralph Northam said at a news conference he had prematurely apologized for appearing in what he called a "horrific" picture of a person in blackface and another wearing a Ku Klux Klan outfit in his 1984 yearbook page.
The page is from the 1984 yearbook of Eastern Virginia Medical School.
The yearbook images were first published Friday afternoon by the conservative news outlet Big League Politics.
Northam, a pediatric neurologist, graduated from the medical school in Norfolk, Virginia in 1984.
Northam, who was recently elected in 2017 and whose term expires in 2022, appealed to his constituents for forgiveness, saying he was "ready to do the hard work of regaining" Virginians' trust.
L. Louise Lucas (D) told the Washington Post that Northam called her Saturday morning to explain his discovery.
In Saturday's press conference, Northam said he is not either of the people in the EVMS yearbook photo, and added that he did "darken his face" that same year, dressing as Michael Jackson for a dance competition.
It read: "There are more old drunks than old doctors in this world so I think I'll have another beer".
Jack Wilson, the chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, said: "Racism has no place in Virginia". In 2018, that party's nominee for the U.S. Senate, Corey Stewart, lost to Democrat Tim Kaine following a campaign where he bragged on Reddit about his love for the Confederacy. "No matter the party affiliation, we cannot stand for such behavior, which is why the NAACP is calling for the resignation of Virginia Governor Ralph Northam".

Scott Walker, who boasted that once it was finally built, the Wisconsin plant would be the size of "11 Lambeau fields". Woo said that the company wants to create a " technology hub " in Wisconsin, but the factory idea had been scrapped.
The official was not authorized to speak on the record to detail a private conversation.
Northam made the shocking abortion remarks in an interview with WTOP-FM on Wednesday, as he attempted to explain a Democrat delegate's earlier remarks supporting a bill relaxing restrictions on late-term abortions.
A wave of outrage swept the political field with both Republicans and Democrats demanding that Northam resign. Northam said he did not buy a yearbook and knew nothing about the photos until they were shown to him.
"He should have said that yesterday, then", she said.
The Virginia Legislative Black Caucus issued a statement late Friday saying "we feel complete betrayal" and are "still processing" the pictures.
The pictures, which have triggered public outcry, show a man in blackface and another man in Ku Klux Klan robes.
"There's no question the tide turned", said one ally, who had been briefed by the governor's senior staff.
He was followed by Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Sherrod Brown, John Delaney, and potential candidates Eric Swalwell, John Hickenlooper, and Terry McAuliffe. Governor Northam must end this chapter immediately, step down, and let Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax heal Virginia's wounds and move us forward. He said the photo comes "with pain beyond what many of us can even understand".
Northam, 59, grew up on the Eastern Shore of Virginia in the fishing village of Onancock.
