Cricket Australia has replaced James Pattinson for the tour of Bangladesh due to inflammation in his back.
The spokesperson has stated that this inflammation has occurred in an area of Pattinson's back that has previously suffered a stress fracture. The Boxing Day Test against Pakistan at the MCG last December was Bird's last Test appearance.
Bird's call-up came hours after Queensland leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson was added to the squad as a replacement for injured fast bowler Mitchell Starc.
Swepson's inclusion was announced early in the morning, with the selectors opting to strengthen the spin department keeping the conditions in Bangladesh in mind.
"Mitchell is a very exciting young leg-spinner who we think will benefit immensely from further experience in the sub-continent".
Australia have chose to go in with only four specialist pacers - James Pattinson, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins.
Australian selectors were expected to announce the 14th member after looking at the performances of the Australia A squad on the South Africa tour.

The company also recently declared a quarterly dividend, which will be paid on Wednesday, September 6th. The company assured panicked donut fans everywhere that the name change really wasn't that big a deal.
It's expected Pattinson will able to resume full training in about a month, ensuring his focus can be on regaining his Test spot ahead of the home Ashes series.
In what has been deemed a "precautionary measure" by a Cricket Australia spokesman, this must be considered a blow for the Victorian who hasn't played Test cricket since early 2016.
He has played just 17 of a possible 66 Test matches since making his debut.
Australia will travel to Bangladesh on August 18 after a week-long preparation camp in Darwin and play a two-day practice match in Fatullah on August 22 and 23.

Australia's 13-man squad was initially named in June to play test matches at Mirpur from August 27 and Chittagong in early September.
