The actor was found dead in his hotel room in Palo Alto, Calif. on Friday (July 21), according to TMZ. The same was confirmed by the Santa Clara medical examiner's office, according to a report by The Guardian.
John Heard, the actor best known for his role as dad Peter McCallister in the "Home Alone" movies, has passed away at the age of 71.
While his role as Peter McCallister endeared him to generations of moviegoers in a singular way, Heard had a versatile and prolific career on stage as well as in movies and television.
Born in Washington DC on March 7, 1945, Heard worked in theater prior to transitioning to the silver screen.

The veteran actor rose to fame after playing Peter McCallister - the father of mischievous Kevin, played by Macaulay Culkin - in the family comedy "Home Alone" and its sequel "Home Alone 2: Lost in NY". "He's a gynecologist. And he's got, what, 12 kids or something?" he said.
Heard later went on to guest star in hit mob drama The Sopranos, for which he earned an Emmy nomination, and in Battlestar Galactica, in which he portrayed Commander Barry Garner.
The actor is survived by two children.
The comedian, Marlon Wayans, who starred with John Heard in 2004 thriller and comedy film "White Chicks" said he and Heard laughed a lot together, reported the Guardian.
