The US Senate Judiciary Committee today unanimously approved the nomination of Christopher Wray to be FBI Director following the dismissal of the agency's former Chief, James Comey, by President Donald Trump. His nomination would now go to the Senate floor, where House Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated he intends to have Wray confirmed before the August recess, according to Politico. Yet his vote Thursday came amid increased vitriol between President Donald Trump and his attorney general, assistant attorney general and the acting director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director and the special counsel appointed to investigate Russia's meddling in last year's election.

Wray's testimony during his confirmation hearing drew bipartisan praise.

Wray told the committee that he would cooperate with Independent Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into allegations of collusion and he suggested disagreement with President Trump's assertion that Mueller's investigation constitutes a political "witch-hunt". He also said he would not allow Trump or any member of his administration to exert undue influence or cause the FBI's impartiality to be questioned.

Wray, 50, would inherit the FBI at a particularly challenging time given the firing of Comey, who was admired within the bureau. Chuck Grassley, the committee's Republican chairman, said in a statement.
