Supergirl returns this fall on Mondays at 8/7c on The CW. Now, Erica Durance has joined the show in a role that is much friendlier to Kara.

Kara's birth mother is getting a new look. Beyond that, there is a major mystery with Mon-El that needs to be unraveled and producers need to figure out how to make use of the limited time that they have with Floriana Lima as Maggie, given that she is just recurring on the show this season.

"Unfortunately Laura, who Greg [Berlanti] and I have worked with for years going back to 'Eli Stone, ' was unable to continue in the role due to work commitments in NY..." "But we are so blessed that Erica has come aboard to offer her own interpretation of Kara's mother". She's notable for being a former Lois Lane, having played the character for 6 seasons on Smallville.

On Twitter on Friday, Benanti explained why she was stepping away from the show. And the commute from NYC to Vancouver is not a very easy one.

Durance played Lois Lane from Season 4 of Smallville and made the character her own.

They also believe it's the bear that trapped a woman inside her vehicle a few days later while it prowled around her garage. To spare the family a return visit, parks officers tracked the bear down and shot and killed it Tuesday morning.

Benanti played twins Alura Zor-El / Astra In-Ze in 10 episodes of "Supergirl" from 2015-2016. She was barely seen at all during the second season. In May, it was announced that Odette Annable was cast as Reign, the season's villain.

Durance joining Supergirl's ranks continues the trend of the show turning to actors that have previously worked in the Superman universe. She joined Supergirl last season as evil Rhea, ultimately battling Kara for the fate of the Earth in the season finale. Mark Hamill has appeared in the #Arrowverse as the Trickster, the same role he played in the '90s series; the same is also true for Amanda Pays, who plays Dr. Tina McGee in both shows.

Of course, those other DC legacy actors have included Hatcher's Lois & Clark supes, Dean Cain (MIA Danvers patriarch Jeremiah), former big-screen Supergirl Helen Slater (Kara and Alex's mom, Eliza), Smallville's version of Kara, Laura Vandervoort (baddie Indigo) and TV's Wonder Woman Lynda Carter (President Olivia Marsdin). Hatcher played Ella Lane, the mother of Durance's Lois.

Since 2012, Durance's had a regular role on the Canada show Saving Hope, which recently finished after five seasons.
