Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has a legal situation to address, as it was reported Tuesday that he's been accused of tax fraud by Madrid's regional state prosecutor.

On Tuesday, prosecutors in Madrid filed a complaint to a court in Pozuelo de Alarcon accusing Ronaldo of a "voluntary" and "conscious" breach of his tax obligations.

According to Forbes, Cristiano is the world's highest-paid athlete for 2017, having earned £73m past year from salary, bonuses and endorsements.

'The Prosecutor's Office says that the player declared the income derived from the transfer of image rights as income from movable capital to evade taxes.

They also alleged that Ronaldo greatly reduced his tax rate by falsely reporting that some of his income came from real estate.

'Cristiano Ronaldo has always shown since his arrival at Real Madrid CF, in July 2009, a clear will to fulfil all his tax obligations.

Ronaldo's representatives have denied the charges.

In December a year ago, GestiFute published details of Ronaldo's £191m assets in response to allegations of tax evasion.

Last month, the Spanish tax authorities announced Ronaldo had adjusted his tax declarations and paid an extra 6 million euros in 2014.

Ronaldo and Mijatovic's indictments follow a string of other high-profile tax fraud cases in Spain such as Lionel Messi and Columbian Radamel Falcao, who have both fallen foul of Spain's crackdown on tax evasion.

In one high-profile case Barcelona's Lionel Messi was handed a 21-month jail sentence and a 2.1-million-euro fine after being convicted on tax-fraud charges previous year. Ronaldo is accused of defrauding over three times more money than Messi. He helped Real Madrid win La Liga (Spain's first division) and the UEFA Champions League last season.

The Argentine, 29, had also received a 21-month jail sentence but avoided prison as it was the forward's first offense.
