At risk from more landslides in the area, a massive rescue effort involving more than 3000 people was underway, Xinhua news agency reported.
State Councillor Wang Yong, who is leading work at the site, demanded all-out efforts to find the missing, treat the injured and minimise casualties.
The government has sent some 3,000 rescuers, along with heavy digging equipment, and has promised to do all it can to look for survivors.
Despite the danger of more landslides, Xinhua reports, the search operation involves more than 3000 people.
In an interview with the publication on Saturday, local publicity department officials described the disaster site as compact, making it hard to expand the scale of the rescue operation.
Rescuers found a droopy-eyed white dog on the rubble, apparently looking for its owner, according to state broadcaster CGTN.
In 1933, 6,800 people died in landslides triggered by an quake and 2,500 more were killed when one of the landslides caused a dam to fail. Xinhua quoted the government of Sichuan province, where the town is located, as saying 141 people were missing.
