Australian Jordan Thompson defeats Andy Murray in shock upset at Queen's

Andy Murray remains confident of a successful Wimbledon campaign despite an uncharacteristic shock defeat to to world No. 90 Jordan Thompson in the first round of the Aegon Championships.

Andy Murray led an all-star exodus from Queen's as the top three seeds were felled, but his loss ahead of Wimbledon casts doubts about his readiness to defend his title.

Andy Murray suffered one of the most embarrassing defeats of his career as the world number one slumped to a stunning Queen s Club first-round defeat by Australia s Jordan Thompson on Tuesday.

"Fewer matches means more practice, so it won't change my home life too much in the build-up to Wimbledon", Murray said. "I have heard great things about the tournament", Djokovic said. "Novak (Djokovic) has won Wimbledon before without playing any matches leading in and Rafa (Nadal) has done the same, so let's all not panic about it".

She next plays Alison Riske, the world number 45 from the United States who is at her best on grass, and has previously reached the semi-final of this tournament.

"I signed in for the lucky loser spot and there weren't too many matches yesterday, but I hung around".

Three or four hours is still enough time to get ready for a different opponent; it can often be a lot shorter. Everything was a lot better in practice. I wouldn't have thought so because he has played very well in much hotter weather than we saw, so I don't think that would've been much of an issue for him.

Murray played the exhibition event at Hurlingham when he last failed to win Queen's in 2014 and could do so again.

But Murray is adamant he still can turn his stuttering form around at the All England Club, where his bid to win a fourth grand slam title begins in less than a fortnight's time.

The Spaniard only has points to gain after missing Wimbledon through injury previous year and could snatch top spot if Murray fails to defend his title. "I would have expected to have played and done a bit better".

"I have been practising for the last seven, eight days".

Last year's runner-up at Queen's and Wimbledon - both times to Murray - lost 7-6 (5), 7-6 (8) to No. 698-ranked Thanasi Kokkinakis, who was playing only his sixth singles since November 2015 because of injury problems. Optimists might suggest that a calamitous defeat here is preferable to one on Centre Court at Wimbledon in two weeks' time, but clearly the Scot has a lot of work to do to avert that possibility. I didn't return particularly well.
