Store owner feels blessed selling winning ticket

The Powerball jackpot had been accumulating since April 1.

After weeks with no winning numbers, one lucky ticket was sold in California Saturday night.

"California is one of just three states that exempt lottery winnings from state income taxes-so long as the victor is a state resident who bought the ticket in California", noted Sean Cockerham of the Sacramento Bee in a 2016 report. The victor will have the option of taking the entire $447.8 million spread out over 30 years or elect to take the lump sum amount of $279.1 million.

Saturday's estimated US$447.8-million jackpot, the seventh largest in Powerball history, beat out the US$435.3 million won by a ticket buyer in IN in a Feb 22 drawing, after a late surge in ticket buying.

Alberre said Sunday he has not received much information about the bonus the store will receive and doesn't know what his family will do with the $1 million that officials have said is set aside for the store that sold the winning ticket.

North Korea denies torturing USA student Otto Warmbier
Warmbier died days after his return to the United States, and his funeral was held Thursday in his hometown of Wyoming, Ohio. North Korean officials, however, say that he was in his "normal state of health" upon his return to the United States.

The ticket was reportedly sold in Sun City in Riverside County.

Menifee Mayor Neil Winter said he hoped a local resident bought the winning ticket at the store in a heavily visited intersection that has sold winners before but never for so much.

It was a switch that essentially traded lower odds for increased payouts, such as Saturday night's $448 million victor. Those figures are just the amounts withheld up front; your final tax burden is likely to be even higher.

Powerball is played in 44 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Alberre owns the store with his father, who has owned it for 26 years.
