Kushner was accompanied to the meeting by the USA ambassador to Israel, David Friedman; Jason Greenblatt, President Donald Trump's special envoy to the Middle East; and Israel's ambassador to the United States, Ron Dermer.

Kushner will also travel to Ramallah, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, for talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The president has made it clear that working towards achieving a lasting peace agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians is a top priority for him.

Video showed him giving Mr Netanyahu, a friend of Mr Kushner's father, a handshake and a hug as they prepared to sit down with the Israeli ambassador to Washington, the U.S. ambassador to Israel and other senior officials for preliminary discussions.

"This is an opportunity to pursue our common goals of security, prosperity and peace", Netanyahu told Kushner in a short video released by the premier's office.

"The president sends his best regards and it's an honor to be here with you", Kushner said.

In both Tuesday's meeting with Greenblatt and Wednesday's meeting with Kushner, the Palestinians presented the American envoys with a position paper addressing all the core issues, in particular the question of borders and settlements.

Greenblatt and Kushner have been tasked with reviving peace negotiations.

This month marked the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Six Day War - a seminal event in which Israel captured the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.

An issue of contention, however, seems to be the PA's payment of salaries to Palestinian prisoners and families of dead terrorists as well as incitement to terror in the PA-administered areas.

Naftali Bennett, Israel's right-wing education minister, has also introduced a bill in the Israeli parliament that would prevent any future divisions of Jerusalem, by mending Israel's Basic Law on Jerusalem to necessitate the approval of 80 of the 120 Knesset members to make any changes to the law, instead of the regular majority vote. Shortly afterwards, Israel annexed East Jerusalem, claiming it part of its "indivisible capital", a move never recognized internationally.

Palestinian sources said the United States officials had also taken the Israeli stance regarding incitement.

"I personally believe that the most important thing between people is mutual trust", Kahlon said.

Sources from the Palestinian Authority say they had been asked for a list of 12 bullet point demands ahead of the meeting. He said a Palestinian delegation would head to Washington next month for further talks.

In relation to this meeting, it's worth noting Netanyahu and Kushner's father are friends. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said work had begun for the first new Israeli settlement in two decades, to replace Amona, a settlement outpost built on private Palestinian land that was dismantled in February following an Israeli Supreme Court ruling.

The Palestinians and the worldwide community consider the settlements obstacles to Palestinian statehood.

Well-placed sources have also told The Times of Israel that there are no imminent plans for a Netanyahu-Abbas summit.

Israel continued aggressively building illegal settlement homes, to the ire of the Obama administration, which at the end of its term in office did not block a United Nations resolution calling on Israel to halt its settlement construction.

Kusher met with Prime Minister Netanyahu soon after his arrival Wednesday.
