MedStar Washington Hospital Center made the announcement on Tuesday, almost a week after a gunman opened fire on Scalise and his Republican colleagues at a baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

The update Wednesday also said Scalise is "beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation". He's now expected to recover.

The Louisiana Republican was one of several people shot on Wednesday morning during a practice for a Congressional baseball game. "The round fragmented, and caused significant damage to bones, internal organs and blood vessels".

Before that, he had been in critical condition since he was brought to the hospital in shock after the shooting.
