Pyongyang has denied allegations of torturing USA student Otto Warmbier, who was imprisoned in North Korea for more than a year and died days after returning home, the Foreign Ministry's official spokesman said, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
North Korea issued its first official statement after the death of USA student, Otto Warmbier.
The diplomat said Warmbier "had been provided with the necessary treatment, although North Korea had no reason at all to show mercy to such a criminal of the enemy state". He had suffered a severe neurological injury from an unknown cause, according to his doctors.
"Our relevant agencies treat all criminals. thoroughly in accordance with domestic laws and global standards and Warmbier was not an exception", a spokesman for the National Reconciliation Council said.
Warmbier was detained and sentenced to hard labor early past year while he was in a hotel on a tourist trip.
"I was just so happy to see the kid released", Mr Rodman told ABC News in an interview.
More than a year went by without public word of Warmbier before the State Department learned of his dire condition on June 6.
Rodman is feeling the major blowback and insisting, "I didn't know that he was sick". "Some good things came out of this trip".

North Korea also further reemphasized their stance that Otto's sentence was deserving of his offense, which they maintain was an act of subversion against the government while also attempting to ward off "groundless" accusations that Otto was tortured or beaten.
The 22-year-old died on June 20 in Cincinnati, Ohio, with his family at his side.
"When I was organizing the trip and I (met) with the delegates here, I addressed Otto Warmbier and I said to them we would need some type of good faith if we're ever going to do some type of future sports relations".
The spokesman said that Warmbier was released on humanitarian grounds after repeated requests from the current administration but that it had been repaid with criticism that represented a "frontal challenge". "Let's try to work this out", said Rodman, who starred in two seasons of "Celebrity Apprentice".
Warmbier, 22, was arrested in the reclusive country while visiting as a tourist in January 2016.
In a statement issued on Friday, North Korea claimed that the sudden death of Otto Warmbier was a mystery even to their nation as his health indicators were normal, as reported by Yonhap News. "They said they understood".
Fred Warmbier has called on North Korea to release other American detainees.
"To make it clear, we are the biggest victim of this incident and there would be no more foolish judgment than to think we do not know how to calculate gains and losses".
