Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has finally unwrapped his plan for dismantling President Barack Obama's health care law.
To pass the Senate, with unanimous Democratic opposition expected, Republicans can only afford two defectors.
McConnell is also under pressure from GOP centrists, creating a hard balancing act for the leader. "The Senate bill may be even meaner". The other lawmakers have been seen as more likely to get to "yes, ".
Several Republican senators have already said they oppose the bill, at least as of now.
McConnell, R-Ky., released the bill Thursday after weeks of closed-door meetings searching for middle ground between conservative senators seeking an aggressive repeal of Obama's statute and centrists warning about going too far. He noted that there "isn't anything in this bill that would lower premiums", and that to say otherwise would be a "lie".
Paul also said it was not clear whether the four senators would stay united as talks continue.
Assuming that 23 million fewer people would have coverage, we estimate that the coverage losses from the Senate bill would result in 27,700 additional deaths in 2026.
Instead, the bill entices people to voluntarily buy a policy by offering them tax credits based on age and income to help pay premiums.
To make it clear, we are the biggest victim of this incident
He was arrested for allegedly stealing a political sign from a restricted area and sentenced to 15 years of hard labor. Warmbier died so suddenly after returning home because his health indicators were "normal" upon his release.
Senator Roger Wicker of MS expressed some disappointment that the new bill bears too many similarities to Obamacare.
But tweaks to appease the four conservatives could alienate Heller and other moderates, or vice versa. "We're dealing with reality and getting to 50", he stated. And like the House bill, it would restructure Medicaid, imposing per capita spending caps.
Menendez gave his remarks at the Newark Community Health Center, a federally-funded health clinic where over 60 percent of patients rely on Medicaid to fund treatment.
Medicaid was a program originally designed as a health insurance program for the poorest of the poor. That program is jointly funded by the states and the federal government.
"You've got states across the country, including Pennsylvania, that have to balance their budget", he said. But the immediate problem is getting rid of Obamacare's Medicaid expansion. "I can't imagine, quite honestly, that I'd have the information to evaluate and justify a yes vote within just a week". Even Donald Trump called the House bill "mean", despite celebrating its passage last month.
The top 1 percent of society will find their Obamacare taxes, those created to fund care for the poor, repealed.
Nevada senator Dean Heller has become the fifth Republican to come out in opposition to the current draft version of the Senate healthcare bill.
