Lewis Hamilton wins Canadian Grand Prix for a sixth time

"It is kind of insane to think I had my first pole position and grand prix win here 10 years ago", Hamilton added.

Winning pole position at one of his favourite races was a thrill for Lewis Hamilton, but being presented afterward with a helmet once worn by his boyhood idol Ayrton Senna had the defending Canadian Grand Prix champion almost in tears.

Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo came in third behind Bottas while 4-time champion Sebastian Vettel, who drives for Ferrari, finished the race at the fourth spot.

Lewis Hamilton had some words of praise for his team's performance as they swiftly fixed the problems that they had with the auto in Monaco before their race in Canada.

"I think it should put us in a strong position moving forwards, in terms of which direction we need to keep developing the vehicle".

"It was our first one-two of the year so in terms of optimal points it was the most powerful weekend we've had, and we maximised it". "Today we showed that we can have an answer (to Ferrari) if we put the work in". I hope this can continue throughout the year.

"You can see the relief in the team that we've bounced back after such a hard weekend, it's just what the doctor ordered".

Vettel started from the front row of the grid but was overhauled by Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen, who swept across from the outside line, tagging the German's front wing. But the Mercedes driver was in no mood to lose out on his advantage so easily.

Hamilton had also struggled in Sochi, where he finished fourth, and that track and Monte Carlo share characteristics with Canada - low-grip, low-abrasion tracks with short duration corners and where the tyre selection of the softest rubber was also the same. Montreal appeared to prove they finally have the solution.

Antonio Conte "wants Chelsea to sign Leonardo Bonucci or Virgil van Dijk"
Liverpool legend John Aldridge, who played with Nicol at Anfield, suggested Van Dijk should go on strike to force through a move. According to Di Marzio , Chelsea are looking at signing van Dijk with the Blues prepared to pay close to £60 million.

"The vehicle is back to where it should be", Hamilton said. "Once I was there, I could not go back".

Their work was rewarded in Montreal as Hamilton acknowledged.

"We came out last", said Vettel, who saw his lead in the standings cut from 25 to 12. "He (Hamilton) was the better man today but I am not entirely happy", said the German, victor of three of six races so far, compared to Hamilton's two.

"I'm just so honored to be here this weekend", he said. "You are hoping the vehicle held together, and it did".

Vettel quickly set about chasing down the pink duo ahead and he got the better of Ocon at turn one, coming down the inside and forcing him wide. This is not an instinct business, this is a scientific business.

"The championship is still long enough".

Renault's Jolyon Palmer had a slightly better race this time, finishing in P11, while Magnussen took P12 and Ericsson P13. The stewards said they would look at it after the race.

"You always need weekends like this and for me there was a lot of time to think, when I was up front, reliving memories from 2007 and several other years here".

The championship resumes in two weeks in Baku, Azerbaijan.
