News agency Lusa cited a source from the civil protection agency saying a helicopter was on its way to the area where the plane had gone down.

On Tuesday, members of the UME battled the fire at Cernache do Bonjardim, a village 20 kilometres away from Pedrogao Grande, where the deadliest forest fire in Portugal's recent history began on Saturday.

Some firefighting resources were being diverted to Gois, about 20 kilometres from Pedrogao Grande, where nearly 800 firefighters and four planes were battling the flames.

Earlier, firefighters said they were close to bringing the blaze under control.

Questions also remain over how so many people could have died, majority perishing on a single road that locals say should have been sealed off by first responders.

"I have no information that any airplane working for civil protection has crashed", said Mr Vaz Pinto, adding that an explosion heard by many in the vicinity may have been caused by abandoned gas bottles.

There were conflicting reports over whether a water-dropping plane had crashed.

Civil Protection Agency spokesman Fausto Coutinho said authorities had received reports of a plane crash near where the deadliest wildfires on record are raging.

She says her office immediately sent a crash investigation team to the area but that she had no details about the plane, its crew or where the crash happened.

Temperatures forecast to reach 109 degrees, gusting winds and bone-dry woodland were fueling the blazes, Vaz Pinto said.

The death toll was raised from 63 to 64 on Monday night.

Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa asked why a highway dubbed the "road of death" - where most of the 64 victims perished - had not been blocked off.
