Nabra Hassanen's Washington DC Memorial Set On Fire

Some 5,000 people attended Hassanen's funeral in Sterling, Virginia on Wednesday. Hassanen went missing earlier in the day Sunday after she and her friends left a mosque, according to police. Police are investigating it as a road rage crime.

Her body was found in a pond near the apartment of Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, an immigrant from El Salvador whom authorities suspect of being in the USA illegally.

Fairfax police, in their account of the attack, said Martinez Torres and one of the boys in the group got into an argument, and the motorist chased the youngsters down and got out swinging the bat.

WRC-TV reported that Martinez Torres was questioned near the scene of the attack, and led officers several miles away to a retention pond across the street from his apartment complex where a female body, believed to be the girl's, was found at about 3 p.m. Sunday. "I wish we could get beyond these types of incidents, but unfortunately we keep seeing them occur over and over again".

Most mourners were Muslim, but Christians and Jews attended as well.

A student at South Lakes High School in Reston, Nabra was known for her enthusiasm for fashion and makeup. He says "this community will not forget this young lady or her family".

"She would say, 'Salaam aleikum, Auntie, ' " Bhuiyan said, using an Arabic greeting meaning "peace be unto you". "I would never feel that she will always be safe".

Imam Mohamed Magid described Hassanen as bright, beautiful, energetic and generous.

Lamia Sarver of McLean does not usually attend the ADAMS mosque, but said she wants to support the Hassanen family.

As the girls finished with "We are the World", those watching sang and clapped along.
