A special TADA court in Mumbai pronounced on Friday its judgment in the second leg of the trial in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case involving seven accused including extradited gangster Abu Salem. While the court convicted five of the accused under the common charge of criminal conspiracy, it acquitted Siddiqui of the charges, finding him guilty only under one section of the Terrorism and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act.
In addition, Abdul Qayyum Shaikh, who was acquitted by the court, had allegedly sent arms and ammunition from overseas which landed at Dighi Jerry in Mumbai just prior to the blasts taking place. The court will pronounce the sentence after hearing arguments from the defence and the prosecution. Yakub was hanged to death on 30 July, 2015, after several pleas by him seeking clemency were rejected.
Khan, who along with his two associates, allegedly shot at his wife in Janakpuri on June 3, had previously been arrested by Mumbai Police on charges of firing at actress Raveena Tandon's husband Anil Thadani. They are facing charges of criminal conspiracy, waging war against the Government of India and murder.
The attacks, which occurred on March 12, 1993, remain the largest coordinated terror incident to have taken place on Indian soil in terms of the number of casualties, according to CNN affiliate News18. The court observed that the prosecution failed to prove conspiracy charges against Siddiqui.
Considering the observation made by the Supreme Court of Justice, Portugal in its order on January 27, 2005, the court kept its order in mind.
