According to Frank Wouters, a UAE-based renewable energy strategist and consultant, if the wall is built with solar panels on top, the mirrors will need to be positioned to receive the most amount of sunlight during the day - which for northern hemisphere countries, including the United States, means facing them to the south.
"Think of it, the higher it goes, the more valuable it is". Trump stressed that this was his idea. "Yes, we will build a wall", he told a crowd in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
"I think we could make it look lovely, too", he added. Under pressure from Democrats, the U.S. Congress has so far refused to commit funding to the project, agreeing only to finance maintenance on existing parts of the border fence.
During last year's presidential election campaign, Mr Trump repeatedly insisted he would force Mexico to foot the bill for the wall - however, the Mexican government says it will not pay a single peso.
President Donald Trump has proposed building a "solar wall" on the Mexican border that would pay for itself by generating electricity. To help cover the Homeland Security Department's estimated cost of $21 billion, photo-voltaic cells could bring the cost down.

Finally, FMR LLC bought a new stake in Washington Real Estate Investment Trust during the fourth quarter worth about $45,757,000. The company provided EPS guidance of $0.40-0.42 for the period, compared to the Thomson Reuters consensus EPS estimate of $0.45.
Mr Trump told cheering supporters at a campaign-style rally in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday that he would "give you an idea that nobody has heard about yet". We're working it out, we'll see. Trump added that the wall would help pay for clean energy and help fund the wall during a rally in Iowa.
Mexico's foreign ministry and the office of President Enrique Peña Nieto declined to comment when asked about Trump's vow that the country would pay less for the wall under his plan. Axios reported earlier this month that Trump pitched the solar panel idea to congressional leaders in a closed-door meeting, though it's not clear how serious he was.
"Solar panels are very cheap now so I'm not convinced the revenue that is generated would come close to what is needed to pay for a wall", Mr Wouters said. WaPo used the opportunity to highlight the pitfalls of putting solar panels atop of border wall.
Among them was one from Gleason Partners in Las Vegas that proposed a wall of steel, cement and solar panels.
