Lam asked to be relieved of working any more overtime, but Celia stated that he had not seemed to be angry at what happened and he said he did not understand why Lam made a decision to open fire on Wednesday morning and shoot his fellow employees.
The situation is ongoing and police said they would alert people when the lockdown has been lifted.
Two other people were shot and have been taken to an area hospital, police said.
The gunman was given medical treatment at the site but died. Officers also determined that the gunman was still inside the cavernous facility and actively targeting people.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
The official said Lam is from San Francisco, but had no immediate details on his background.
Police said they recovered two firearms from the UPS facility, including the murder weapon, which they described as an "assault pistol". The UPS facility is located near 17th Street and San Bruno Avenue, ABC San Francisco station KGO-TV reported.
Lefiti's cousin, Bob Toia, told the San Francisco Chronicle that Lefiti was devoted to his wife, family and kids. The suspect, dead on arrival, after being confronted by police and taking his own life, identified in the early moments after the gunfire stopped as a UPS employee.
Workers fled frantically into the streets shouting "Shooter!" and police swarmed in, authorities and witnesses said.

Chaplin stated that when the police arrived on the scene, they were told that the suspect was still somewhere inside the building.
Police said Lam then fatally shot himself in the head.
The gunman was identified by authorities as San Francisco resident Jimmy Lam. The facility employs about 350 people, UPS said.
"They were banging on the bus and they were screaming, 'Go! Go!"

"I was confused. They crossed the street and when they got to me, they said, 'Run, there is a shooter, ' so I started to run with them", she said. It is unclear if any of the victims were targeted, but Chaplin said he does not believe the case to be linked to terrorism.
