And, sure enough, a week after Trump and his legal team spiked footballs and celebrated that Trump wasn't a target of the Russian Federation probe, The Washington Post reported that Trump is indeed being investigated by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for obstruction of justice.

But Rosenstein is not now heading the FBI's probe into the Trump campaign's possible collusion with a Russian campaign that US intelligence officials have said was seeking to tilt the outcome of the 2016 election in Trump's favor.

Rosenstein isn't investigating the President, but he did appoint Special Counsel Robert Mueller to look into Russia's role in the 2016 presidential election, which includes investigating alleged collusion between Trump campaign officials and the Kremlin.

But the source close to Trump's outside counsel said on condition of anonymity that the president was not confirming the investigation but was referring to a Washington Post story on Wednesday based on anonymous sources.

"This is a political fight and he's going to fight it", a White House official said regarding president's Friday's tweets. Americans should be skeptical about anonymous allegations. Feinstein took notice of this, and the Senate Intelligence Committee chairwoman expressed concern about what this announcement would mean for Robert Mueller, Rod Rosenstein, and the probes about obstruction of justice and Russia's actions during the 2016 election.

Notably, James Comey, who was sacked by Trump last month, publicly testified this month that Trump had told him to ease off on his former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was under the FBI investigation for his Russian links.

Rosenstein wrote a memo indicating that the FBI is unlikely to regain the trust of the public and Congress until it has a Director who understands the gravity and pledges no to repeat Comey's mistakes in handling the investigation into Hillary Clinton's e-mails.

Trump aides have urged him to stop meddling in the investigative process, but law enforcement and intelligence officials have recounted how the president has asked them to push back against the probe or to publicly exonerate him.

The new allegations against Trump center on his own admission that he fired Comey because of the Russian Federation investigation.

The order from the general counsel for the transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump's presidential campaign and representatives of Russia's government. He said he believes Mr Trump ultimately fired him "because of the Russian Federation investigation".

The Post reported that FBI agents and federal prosecutors are also looking into the financial dealings of Flynn, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former campaign policy adviser Carter Page.
