The launch of EPYC completes a re-entry in the works for over the five years after its successive products got shadowed by those from peers. Today, AMD is revealing its chip lineups for two-socket and single-socket servers, as well as some projections of those chips' performance relative to Intel's Broadwell Xeons.
Higher clocked parts can be had at the cost of cores, so which models you choose will really depend on your overall needs.
For compatibility with the fastest kinds of memory chips for servers or to be able to send the largest amounts of information quickly between the central processing chip and memory or storage, Intel requires that customers buy a package that includes two chips, known as a dual socket design, even if they don't need the extra processing power of two chips. Primary hypervisor and server operating system providers Microsoft, Red Hat, and VMware showcased optimized support for EPYC, while key server hardware ecosystem partners Mellanox, Samsung Electronics, and Xilinx were also featured in EPYC-optimized platforms.
"With our EPYC family of processors, AMD is delivering industry-leading performance on critical enterprise, cloud, and machine intelligence workloads", said Lisa Su, president and CEO, AMD. With our next-generation Xeon Scalable processors, we expect to continue offering the highest core and system performance versus AMD. With yesterday's announcement, AMD has officially unveiled Naples as Epyc, their new enterprise server offering.
JURASSIC WORLD 2 Has Its Official Title and Poster
Many fans are speculating that the private dinosaur collection might be somehow connected to John Hammond. Bayona tweeted out the film's first official photo showing a young girl looking at triceratops bones.
The AMD Epyc 7000 series is based on the company's groundbreaking Zen architecture, and the chips will have as many as 32 Zen cores each.
Several institutional investors have recently bought and sold shares of AMD. If don't really much CPU compute, but you do want as many PCI-E lanes as possible then AMD's low-end EPYC parts are pretty compelling. Relative strength index (RSI-14) for Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. The bigger memory footprint also makes the single-socket EPYC solution more attractive, since many customers often populate the second socket exclusively for the objective of adding more memory. AMD was joined by multiple customers and partners at the global launch event in presenting a wide array of systems, performance demonstrations, and customer testimonials.
Finally we have what I think is the single most interesting SKU in the whole of the EPYC product stack, the 7251. "It's an awesome way to start, to show that with one socket AMD can do the job of two-socket ones", said Antonio Neri, Executive Vice-President and General Manager at HP Enterprise. AMD's approach of stitching together 4 desktop die in a processor is expected to lead to inconsistent performance and other deployment complexities in the data center. Along with needs for computing, come the requirement for a safer environment for data as reams of private information from credit card numbers to social security details are now being stored in the data centres. AMD claims that Epyc offers higher performance at lower prices than the comparable Intel chips now on the market. AMD announced that HPE, Dell, Asus, Gigabyte, Inventec, Lenovo, Sugon, Supermicro, Tyan, and Wistron will introduce products based on the Epyc 7000 series.
Ten years ago, AMD put quite the scare in Intel with its Opteron design, which caught Intel flat-footed as server power consumption became just as important - and in some cases, more important - as pure performance.
