But his scorn for the reclusive nation has seemingly grown in the days since Otto Warmbier, a young American man who was imprisoned in North Korea for 17 months and reportedly tortured, was returned to the us last week in a coma.

A spokesman for the Hamilton County coroner said Dr Lakshmi Sammaraco's office has accepted the case of Otto Warmbier, who died on Monday in a Cincinnati hospital.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson warned Monday that Washington holds North Korea "accountable" for Warmbier's fate, and demanded the release of three other Americans held by North Korea.

Warmbier had been sentenced to 15 years of hard labor after being found guilty of trying to steal a propaganda poster from a hotel during a January 2016 visit to North Korea's capital.

When he returned to the United States from North Korea last week after being medically evacuated, he was in a coma with severe brain damage. That said, Trump did acknowledge that China at least tried.
