Separately, another Chinese carrier, Donghai Airlines, opted to convert an earlier order for 10 smaller Max jets to 10 Max 10s, as did Malaysia Airlines, while Panama's Copa Airlines converted an order for 15.
Boeing announced firm orders Tuesday for more than 45 planes worth $5.4 billion at list prices, though customers routinely negotiate discounts.

The 737 MAX family has been created to offer customers exceptional performance, flexibility and efficiency, with lower per-seat costs and an extended range that will open up new destinations in the single-aisle market.
In response, Boeing has designed the 737 Max 10 to be larger than its previous model in order to increase passenger capacity.

The Max 10 is aimed largely at rival Airbus and its updated A320neo family of narrowbody planes that are a direct competitor to Boeing's 737. The Max 10 will be 5 1/2 feet (1.68 meters) longer than the $119.2 million Max 9, now the biggest member of the re-engined 737 aircraft family, which was launched in 2011.
