Major bureaucratic reshuffle: Rajiv Gauba to be next Union Home Secretary

The government on Wednesday appointed 16 secretaries, including Rajiv Gauba as the home secretary-designate and Subhash C Garg as economic affairs secretary.

In a high-level reshuffle, the government June 21 transferred 27 IAS officers, while announcing Urban Development Secretary Rajiv Gauba will be the next home secretary after incumbent Rajiv Mehrishi retires August 30.

The reshuffle will see new Babus heading administrative set-up in NHAI, Information & Broadcasting Ministry, Telecom Ministry, Road Transport Ministry among others.

Gauba, a 1982 batch Jharkhand cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, will take charge from incumbent Rajiv Mehrishi on August 30 when he superannuates after a fixed tenure of two years. He will be appointed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Ministry of Home Affairs from September 1. Ajay Prakash Sawhney will replace her as secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Additional secretary Durga Shanker Mishra will replace Gauba as Urban Development secretary in the same department. Arun Kumar Panda will take over as secretary in the ministry of micro, small and medium enterprises once K K Jalan retires at the end of the month.

Notable among them was appointment of NK Sinha, a 1980 batch Bihar cadre IAS officer as the next secretary in the ministry of information and broadcasting.

Rajive Kumar of the 1981-batch of UP cadre was repatriated to Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday from the shipping ministry - he is expected to become the UP chief secretary.

Meanwhile, food processing secretary Avinash K Shrivastava will trade places with consumer affairs secretary Jagdish Prasad Meena. Malik, who was serving as chairman of the National Highways Authority of India will be replaced by Deepak Kumar, the director general of Employee's State Insurance Corporation.

Rajiv Kapoor has been appointed as Secretary, Chemicals and Petrochemicals - a post lying vacant.

Sanjeevanee Kutty was appointed as the Secretary in Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare. Ajay Kumar Bhalla will be the new Power Secretary.
