The launch of an Iranian Emad intermediate-range ballistic missile.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said today missiles it fired into Syria had successfully hit Islamic State group targets in retaliation for Tehran attacks claimed by the jihadists earlier this month.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for a June 7 attack in which six terrorists attacked Iran's parliament and a mausoleum dedicated to revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, leaving a total of 17 victims dead and more than 50 injured.

Meanwhile, U.S. -backed opposition fighters said that Assad's forces have been attacking their positions in the northern Raqqa province, and warned that they would take action if the attacks continue.

The launch, which hit Syria's eastern city of Deir el-Zour on Sunday night, appeared to be Iran's first missile attack overseas in over 15 years and its first in the Syrian conflict amid its support of embattled President Bashar Assad. Iran has sent to Syria military advisers as well as thousands of "volunteer" fighters recruited among its own nationals as well as the Shiite communities in neighbouring Afghanistan and Pakistan since Syria's conflict broke out in March 2011.

Separately, Iran said that it had launched a barrage of missiles into Islamic State territory in eastern Syria.

It also raises questions about how U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, which had previously put Iran "on notice" for its ballistic missile tests, will respond. It has test-fired a number of missiles since Iran struck the 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, including the U.S.

"The Americans are against Popular Forces because they want Iraq to lose its main source of strength", he said. Iran has a large and diverse ballistic missile arsenal with weapons that comparatively more developed than the Zolfaqar.

Senior Iranian officials, however, have pointed a finger at Saudi Arabia, Iran's Sunni regional rival. Izadi said it was partly intended for a Saudi audience.

Most estimates suggest that Kim's unpredictable regime is between three and five years away from achieving its nuclear ambitions. Mattis says China shares the USA desire for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and "continues to work this issue".

Iranian officials threatened more strikes.

The spokesman was apparently referring to USA sales of $110 billion worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia during President Donald Trump's visit to the kingdom last month.

The area is of strategic significance to Tehran as it seeks to secure a land corridor to its allies in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon and establish a "Shi'ite crescent" of influence that has long concerned USA -allied states in the Middle East.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said Monday that "unlike others, Iran doesn't buy security and stability". "That would be another mistake on the scope of the Iraq War", he said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seemed to take Iran's missile launch seriously, saying on Monday: "We are following their actions and we are following their words".

But Israeli military chief Gadi Eisenkot said Tehran was lying about the strike: "Their achievement was less than what was reported in the media".

Boroujerdi said the strike marked "a new phase in the fight against terrorism".

The launch takes place just a couple of hours after Iran's Supreme leader said "they can not slap us in the face".

"But the attack shows we are capable of hitting terrorists hundreds of kilometres away".
