U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise's condition has been upgraded to "serious" after he underwent surgery Saturday for injuries sustained in a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice earlier this week, the hospital treating him said in a release.
"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", said Dr. Jack Sava at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Hodgkinson, the IL man who shot House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and others at a congressional baseball practice last week, had with him a piece of paper with doodles and the names of three lawmakers, according to a person familiar with the case.
About 13 hours after the shooting on Wednesday, the hospital announced that Scalise had been shot in his left hip by a rifle and that "the bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding", the hospital said in a statement Wednesday.
The shot fired at Scalise left perhaps hundreds of bullet fragments internally, many of which may never be removed because surgery might be more unsafe than leaving them in place, Sava said.
Scalise, 51, a Louisiana Republican who is the No. 3 House Republican, remained in critical condition at a hospital a few miles from the stadium after undergoing a third surgery on Thursday.
