Are House Democrats turning on Nancy Pelosi?

House Democratic leaders are taking some comfort in coming in a close second for a seat that's always been firmly in GOP hands. Republican Karen Handel, author of a book about Planned Parenthood titled Planned Bullyhood, ran a repulsive campaign.

Both the Georgia sixth district and the SC fifth are reliably red districts, the chance at flipping either for Democrats was remote.

The Massachusetts Democrat, speaking on CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper" Wednesday afternoon, made his comments following his party's failure to win a closely watched special election in Georgia.

On June 21, Trump took to Twitter again to offer unsolicited advice to Democrats, suggesting that they cooperate with his administration's agenda.

After one of the most contentious and the most expensive Congressional races in USA history, Handel easily defeated Democrat Jon Ossoff 53 percent to 47 percent Tuesday night.

The race for Georgia's 6th district was the most expensive House race in United States history.

The 30 year-old first time candidate was hoping to "Flip The 6th", a district seat that has been in the Republican Party's control since 1979.

The special congressional election was hyped by both Democrats and Republicans, who felt that the results of the race for Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price's seat would give some indication of the political climate for the 2018 midterm elections, in which all 435 positions in the House of Representatives and 33 of the 100 positions in the Senate will be up for grabs. Also on the losing side of the election was taxpayer-funded Planned Parenthood, despite their best efforts to put Ossoff in Congress.

But prescriptions for how the Democrats should move forward varied.

Trump was quick to celebrate the Georgia win and accused Democrats of standing in the way of a legislative agenda bogged down by infighting and investigations into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation in last year's presidential election.

Judging by Karen Handel's upset victory in the Georgia race, Democrats may need to change their strategy if they want 2018 to turn out differently.

"Right, let's abandon the party's best $ raiser & consensus builder cause Rs don't like a Democratic woman that gets things done", Drew Hammill, Pelosi's deputy chief of staff, sarcastically tweeted Tuesday night.

But all is not necessarily lost for Democrats.

And Democrats have a target-rich environment for next year's midterms, starting with 23 Republican-held districts where Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton won a majority of the vote.

"I feel extraordinarily honored and privileged to have this opportunity to represent the people of the 6th District", Handel told Channel 2 political reporter Richard Elliot.

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, at least $56.7 million was spent on the special election.
