A coroner's office in OH is investigating the death of 22 American Otto Warmbier who died less than a week after his return to the USA after almost a year and a half in North Korean detention.

"This is a personal tragedy", Richardson said, adding the American college student's parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, were "heartbroken" at their son's death.

His family said in a statement released by a hospital that Warmbier died Monday afternoon.

"Our deepest condolences are with Otto's family and friends", said U.S. Rep.

Louisville said Thursday it plans to appeal its own NCAA sanctions, hoping to keep its 2013 championship banner in the rafters. The scandal erupted after allegations that former assistant Andre McGee hired strippers to entertain players and recruits.

Former United Nations Ambassador Bill Richardson on Tuesday called the death of former North Korean prisoner Otto Warmbier "close to" murder and said Pyongyang "should be punished in some way for the way they acted".

The Hamilton County Coroner's Office in OH confirmed that it received and examined the 22-year-old's body after his death on Monday.

"The very bad torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today". Doctors had described Mr Warmbier's condition as a state of "unresponsive wakefulness" and said he suffered a "severe neurological injury" of unknown cause.

This story has been corrected to show that the coroner's last name is Sammarco, not Sammaraco. He says the US holds North Korea accountable for Warmbier's "unjust imprisonment" and demands the release of three other "illegally detained" Americans. Warmbier had been released by Pyongyang days earlier after 17 months in state prison.

The Republican senator says Warmbier was a promising young man who was kind, generous and accomplished. "Considering these facts and this tragic outcome we will no longer be organizing tours for USA citizens to North Korea". It's impossible to know what the cause of death was, but specialists revealed that it had to do with a lack of oxygen reaching his brain. Warmbier returned to the USA last week in a coma after 17 months in North Korea.

Mr Warmbier, who was jailed for trying to steal a propaganda sign from a hotel, did not regain consciousness. Fifteen years at hard labor.

North Korean officials claimed Warmbier fell into a coma in March past year due to botulism and a sleeping pill.
