US Warplane Shoots Down Armed Drone in Syria

In response, the U.S. Central Command issued its own statement, saying the Syrian aircraft was shot down "in collective self-defense of coalition-partnered forces".

The latest incident occurred in a part of Syria seen as strategically important for the Syrian government and Iran as Tehran seeks to secure a land corridor between forces it backs in Syria and Iraq.

In an indirect reference to Iranian-backed forces that have been gathering in the eastern desert region, a US-led coalition statement cited a recent escalation of tensions and said it would not "tolerate any hostile intent and action of pro-regime forces".

On Sunday evening, a Syrian regime SU-22 fighter dropped bombs near USA -backed Syrian Democratic Forces fighters south of Tabqah in Syria and, in accordance with rules of engagement, was immediately shot down by a U.S. F/A-18E Super Hornet.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which include Arab and Kurdish fighters and are supported with air strikes by a US -led coalition, began an offensive two weeks ago to seize the northern city from Islamic State, which overran it in 2014.

The U.S. military has established a roughly 50-kilometer "deconfliction" ring around Tanf, warning the pro-Assad Iranian-backed forces through a Russian deconfliction channel that movement within the zone could be considered hostile.

The United States is aggressively backing the SDF, a Syrian rebel alliance, as it fights its way into Raqqa, supported by intense coalition airstrikes.

Coalition troops were working in the area alongside local forces who are being trained to fight ISIL.

There are fears Canadian military aircraft operating over Syria could be caught in the middle of a new and potentially explosive dispute between the USA and Russian Federation.
