Hodgkinson, the man who shot and wounded House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) last Wednesday during the Republican's baseball practice, reportedly went on a long anti-Trump tirade at an auto fix shop near the ball field on the day before the shooting.
"Earlier today, Congressman Steve Scalise underwent a second surgery related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg", MedStar said in a statement Thursday. The bullet that struck Scalise tore through his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs and causing severe bleeding, the hospital said. He suffered massive blood loss and was at "imminent risk of death" upon arriving at the hospital Wednesday.
In the course of Thursday night's charity game, which drew a record attendance to Nationals Park, MedStar hospital issued a new update on Scalise's condition, saying that the lawmaker "remains in critical condition, but has improved in the last 24 hours".
"Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in the statement.
"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events".
The president spoke about the 51-year-old from Louisiana again Friday during a speech in Miami.
Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".
