US, Russia, Iran draw new red lines in Syria

The ministry on Monday said it suspended cooperation with the usa on deconfliction zones following the Su-22 shootdown.

This is the first time that an USA jet shoots down a Syrian aircraft since the United States began operations against ISIS in the area.

A US F-15E fighter jet shot down a pro-Syrian regime drone near At Tanf, Syria, on Monday, two United States officials told CNN, the third downing of a pro-regime aircraft this month.

"The Coalition has made it clear to all parties publically [sic] and through the de-confliction line with Russian forces that the demonstrated hostile intent and actions of pro-regime forces toward Coalition and partner forces in Syria conducting legitimate counter-ISIS operations will not be tolerated", it said.

Defence is monitoring the situation closely.

"Australian Defense Force protection is regularly reviewed in response to a range of potential threats", a spokesman told local media.

The Syrian army said the jet was brought down while flying a mission against Isis.

The Syrian Air Force Fighter jet is shot down by the US military on Sunday and this Syrian jet bombed local forces allied with the Americans in the fight against Islamic State militants.

The news comes after a US Navy fighter jet shot down a Syrian warplane on Sunday.

A statement from the US military said it shot down the Syrian SU-22 in self-defense and after contacting Russian counterparts through the established deconfliction zone.

"As the battle for eastern Syria steps up, Russian Federation and its Syrian government ally seem intent on drawing a line in the sky".

Russian Federation warned that it may treat US -led coalition aircraft over Syria as targets after the shooting down of a Syrian government warplane, in an escalation of rhetoric between the two rivals in the Middle East conflict.

The unprecedented USA downing of a Syrian regime warplane highlights the rapidly shifting dynamic in the six-year conflict where President Donald Trump has given American commanders a freer rein in the battlefield.

Russian Federation said Washington had failed to use the line - a vital incident-prevention tool - before targeting the plane near Raqqa.

The US military confirmed a US F-18 Super Hornet shot down a Syrian SU-22 on Sunday, after it dropped bombs near the US partner forces known as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

"ADF operations in Iraq will continue as part of the coalition".

Moscow accused Washington of failing to honor the pact by not informing it of the decision to shoot down the Syrian plane despite Russian aircraft being airborne at the same time.

After the three encounters, Assad's forces wheeled around and seized territory to the north all the way to the Iraqi border, leaving USA forces and their allies largely isolated in the southeast and cutting off their path to the Islamic State group.

Clashes between Syrian troops and SDF would escalate tensions in the country and open a new frontline in the many complex battlefields of the civil war, now in its seventh year.

The incidents reflect mounting competition for areas of Syria where Islamic State (IS) insurgents are in retreat, leaving swathes of territory up for grabs and posing the question of what comes next for USA policy that is shaped first and foremost by the priority of vanquishing the jihadists.
