The company hired former USA attorney general Eric Holder in February after an ex-engineer penned a blog post about the "strange" year she experienced while at Uber.

Uber brought in Holder earlier this year to lead an investigation into sexual harassment and workplace culture at the ride-hailing startup.

Uber directors were weighing a three-month leave of absence for Travis Kalanick, the chief executive who built the startup into a almost $70 billion entity, according to three people with knowledge of the board's agenda. Many roles at Uber have been lying empty in the aftermath of the departure of many high-profile executives from the company.

Uber board member Arianna Huffington has said Mr Kalanick needed to change his leadership style from that of a "scrappy entrepreneur" to be more like a "leader of a major global company".

Earlier this year, former engineer Susan Fowler wrote a searing blog post exposing her experiences with sexism and harassment while working at Uber, including a trip to an escort bar in South Korea and human resources refusing to investigate her harassment claims, all of which prompted Uber's investigation in February. The company said in a statement that "the board unanimously voted to adopt all the recommendations of the Holder Report". However, the possibility of Kalanick taking a leave of absence has triggered a leadership crisis within the company.

Uber announced last week that it fired 20 employees for harassment problems.

As attention turns to Uber's chief executive and one of his deputies, the uncertainty highlights a critical weakness in the company's top ranks.

Uber's long-time head of business, Emil Michael, has left the company, according to an Uber spokesperson.

An Uber spokesman had no comment.

While everyday Uber users will likely not see any immediate changes to the service due to these shakeups, experts say this is an attempt by the company to reign in its reputation as an aggressive company that often acts above the law.
