University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier visited North Korea over New Year's in 2015 as a tourist, and on Tuesday the 22-year-old returned home to the US -in a coma. His family said they found out last week that the 22-year-old has been in a coma since shortly after his trial in March last year for alleged anti-state acts.
Two women waiting outside the airport fence held signs: "WELCOME HOME OTTO" and "PRAYERS FOR OTTO", and said they were there to support his family. He was carried off the plane and taken to a hospital. An armed official at the airport was reported to have dragged Warmbier away. At 10:42 p.m., the ambulances drove away.
In a tearful statement made before his trial, Warmbier told a gathering of reporters in Pyongyang he was offered a used vehicle worth $10,000 if he could get a propaganda banner and was also told that if he was detained and didn't return, $200,000 would be paid to his mother in the form of a charitable donation. They say North Koreans told US authorities that their son contracted botulism and never awoke after he was given a sleeping pill.
Richardson, also a former congressman, energy secretary and ambassador to the United Nations, has always been involved in efforts to secure the release of prisoners and hostages, including those held by North Korea.
The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said in a commentary that the two Koreas experienced "a precious era of reconciliation and unity" in that period.

The release of Otto Warmbier, 18 months into a 15-year sentence, came as US President Donald Trump invited South Korea's new leader Moon Jae-In to Washington for talks on the nuclear standoff.
