Members of both parties projected a sense of camaraderie, following Wednesday's tragic shooting that left House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, a Republican from Louisiana, fighting for his life.

The shooter, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, died at a D.C. -area hospital Wednesday - the result of a gunshot wound sustained during a firefight with Scalise's security detail and the Alexandria Police Department at the practice field that morning.

The bullet damaged blood vessels, bones, and internal organs, Sava said.

Dr. Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said Friday that several operations have controlled the bleeding and Scalise's vital signs have stabilized.

Scalise received numerous blood transfusions as surgeons worked to fix his torn blood vessels and other wounds, Sava said, adding: "We are encouraged by improvement in his condition over the last 36 hours".

Hospital officials said it is hard to predict how long the congressman will be in the hospital, but that he is expected to be able to walk and hopefully run after a period of rehabilitation.

Surgeons estimated that hundreds of bullet fragments remain in Mr Scalise's body. He arrived "in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Sava said, adding that now, "we are encouraged by improvement in his condition".

Griner, who was shot in the ankle, and Bailey, who suffered a minor injury, fired back at the gunman, James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old disgruntled home inspector from IL. The Louisiana republican remains in critical condition at a local hospital.

Queen Elizabeth II visited West London to meet with those who were affected by the fire, as did Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn. The latest figure included the previously released number of 30 deaths in the catastrophe in North Kensington early Wednesday.

Trump and his wife, Melania, visited with Scalise late Wednesday.

David Bailey, a Capitol Hill police officer who was part of Scalise's security detail and helped bring down the shooter, also was injured in the Wednesday incident but had recovered enough to throw the game's ceremonial first pitch. Police also said a dog that had been scared away and lost during the shooting had been located.

Vice President Mike Pence earlier on Thursday said he visited the hospital where Scalise was being treated.

"It's a pretty good time for all, except for the fact that the Democrats beat us so much", Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Ala., said on CNN before describing what happened.

"It's definitely something we have been looking at and we're going to look at in an even more intense manner now", he said.

It came the morning after Scalise was honored at the charity baseball game where he was supposed to play second base for the House Republican team.

Investigators said Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers, and Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful".
