Newt Gingrich leading charge against Mueller for President Trump

"Technically, the President of the United States can not obstruct justice", Gingrich said at the National Press Club in an event to promote his new book, "Understanding Trump". "If he wants to fire the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, all he has to do is fire him", said Gingrich in comments at the National Press Club, where he was promoting a new book.

Those words, of course, do not square with perhaps the most famous vote Gingrich ever cast as a member of Congress - a vote in favor of the impeachment of then-President Bill Clinton.

In English: Anyone who tries to threaten or corruptly influence an executive branch official not to carry forward an investigation has obstructed justice. The left right now is engaged in the Salem witchcraft process.

Gingrich says that the "the mentality of the left right now" is reminiscent of Arthur Miller's book The Crucible.

"How dare you smear a man who served this country honorably for decades in both war and peace, winning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart", Scarborough wrote.

Gingrich's comments are ironic given that he supported the Republican-led effort to impeach Clinton for obstruction of justice and perjury. On Friday he called the investigation into Trump a "witch hunt".

However, he said that Trump did not directly order him stop investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn . Putin compared Comey's documentation of his conversation with President Donald Trump to that of a human rights defender.

Gingrich on Friday said he has warned the president and Trump's aides of just how serious the current investigations are. Gingrich was not the only one to say this, former White House chief strategist for the Bush administration Karl Rove holds the same views on Mueller.

"I keep telling everybody at the White House, this is not like NY real estate law, this is criminal law", he said.

Mueller also once helmed the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

That came a little over a month after he tweeted, "Robert Mueller is superb choice to be special counsel".

Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy, a friend of the President, said earlier this week that Trump was considering firing Mueller, who has been appointed to investigate Russia's influence on the 2016 presidential election.
