It was Rosenstein who appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller to take over the year-old investigation into Russian election meddling started by the FBI, in the wake of President Trump's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey.

President Trump confirmed Friday that he is under investigation for firing FBI Director James Comey. "Witch Hunt", Trump tweeted on Friday morning.

Mr Trump did not identify who "the man" was but appeared to be questioning the integrity of Deputy Attorney-General Rod Rosenstein - the Justice Department's number two official who appointed Mr Mueller on May 17 and wrote a memo to Mr Trump that was critical of Mr Comey's performance after the former director was sacked.

Trump's tweet Friday reflected the first official confirmation that he is being investigated by the special counsel for the reasons he fired Comey last month. And second, said Nichols, the tweet appears to be Trump "attacking the Justice Department".

The Trump International Hotel, which opened last fall just down the street from the White House, took in revenue of about $20 million.

A Justice Department official - who declined to speak on the record - told CNN that the White House didn't order Rosenstein's statement.

Mercedes Schlapp questioned whether some of the lawyers hired by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for the Trump-Russia investigation are truly neutral.

As the investigation expands, that raises the possibility that Rosenstein may recuse himself from that role, since he wrote the memo justifying Comey's firing. News has reported that federal investigators are examining whether the president attempted to obstruct justice.

Trump confirms he is under investigation in Russian Federation inquiry
Democrats and Republicans alike decried President Trump's tweet about the Russian Federation investigation on Capitol Hill Friday. And attacked his own deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein (who now might resign or recuse himself ).

Regardless of the outcome, the specter of Mueller examining the possibility of obstruction of justice appeared to be a new blow to Trump, whose first five months in office have been clouded by the federal and congressional probes into the Russian Federation issue.

The order by the general counsel for the transition team casts a wide net on documents that could shed light on ties between Trump's presidential campaign and representatives of Russia's government.

Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), who said she's anxious that the President will try to fire both Mueller and Rosenstein.

Was the Rosenstein memo the reason Comey was sacked?

On Friday, the President made extraordinary claims against Clinton and her family for their own alleged dealings with Russian Federation, claiming smashed a phone with a hammer and "bleached" emails to cover their tracks.

It was not clear what prompted the statement, although it came hours after The Washington Post reported that the business dealings of Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are being examined as part of Mueller's investigation.

On Thursday Trump derided a "witch hunt" against him, led by some "very bad" people.
