In his first public comments since the shooting, Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it's a "good possibility" that the Louisiana Republican will be able to return to work in his full capacity.

"The [bullet] fragmented and did substantial damage to bones, internal organs, and blood vessels".

MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Scalise had surgery Thursday related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg, and "will require additional operations".

Scalise was shot Wednesday morning as a gunman sprayed bullets into a GOP congressional baseball practice.

The attacker, who had traveled to Washington several months ago from the Midwestern state of IL, was fatally wounded by members of the Capitol Police who were in a security detail protecting Scalise.

Members of Congress took the field at Washington's Nationals Park on Thursday night for the charity baseball game, many wearing hats to honor Scalise, who has represented Louisiana in the House since 2008.

Predicting when the congressman would be released from the hospital was hard, the doctor said, adding that "he will require a period of healing and of rehabilitation". Scalise was hit as a gunman sprayed bullets into a GOP congressional baseball practice outside Washington D.C. "I have not counted, but I would guess that there are hundreds of fragments", Sava said.

Fowler leads US Open on day of highs and lows
He did it without making a bogey or breaking much of a sweat in the Wisconsin heat, and saving the smiles for after his round. All this suggests that it's Fowler's time. "Hit it in the hay and contemplated going for it a little bit", said Hadwin.

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events", Mrs. Scalise said in the statement.

Scalise sustained a single gunshot wound in the hip that traveled across the congressman's body to his other hip - called a transpelvic gunshot wound, according to Sava, who spoke to reporters at a news conference Friday afternoon.

Sava said he was optimistic about the progress made by Scalise over the past 48 hours.

"There is more risk involved in removing them".

The president said that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".

The FBI said that the shooter's weapons found at the scene - a 9mm handgun and 7.62mm caliber rifle - had been legally purchased. The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content.

Also hurt but released from hospitals were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth. Richmond, who plays for the Democratic team, said he had visited the hospital multiple times.
