Top Republican Congressman, 3 Others Shot When Gunman Opens Fire

The congressional baseball match pits Republicans against Democrats.

United States lawmakers have returned to regular business ready to play their annual charity baseball game a day after a man angry at President Donald Trump fired on Republican legislators, leaving a senior congressman in critical condition. Also wounded was former congressional aide Matt Mika, who now works for Tyson Foods in its Washington office.

James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Ill., who was gunned down by police to end the shooting at Simpson Field in Alexandria, Va., appears to have maintained two Facebook pages, each replete with profane anti-Trump posts.

Thursday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said both of Hodgkinson's firearms - a 9 mm handgun and 7.62 mm Chinese-made assault rifle - were purchased legally. The annual game, which raises funds for charities, was scheduled for Thursday evening.

In the past, the game was canceled due to The Great Depression, World War II, and a House speaker's presumption that baseball is just too rough.

"For everything that's wrong with Washington, this is one of the things that's truly right", he said.

That is a goal that all members of Congress and yes, all Americans, should commit to achieve.

On Wednesday night, the eve of the big game, the Democratic Team hosted a dinner for the Republicans.

"A lot of times in politics we have divisions but it shouldn't come to violence", he said.

Here were the five best moments (in my opinion) from last night's game.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Thursday urged prayers for Scalise and the other victims of the shooting.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise speaks to reporters at the US Capitol, hours before an expected vote to repeal Obamacare in Washington, D.C., US on May 4, 2017. And the male Capitol Police officer who was shot Wendesday threw out the first pitch, which bounced over home plate. Murphy sported the uniform of the Hartford Yard Goats, the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, as he did past year. Although he said a few extra precautions might be prudent - like alerting local law enforcement to larger gatherings of congressional members such as the Wednesday morning baseball practice - Abraham said a protective guard for congressional members would get in the way of the accessibility Abraham said is a cornerstone of a USA representative's job.

But Flake said the final score wasn't likely to matter this year. "If we don't play this baseball game and we go home, then they win".

Ralph Northam wins Democratic nomination for governor
Perriello pledged in his concession speech to help Northam and said his campaign had shown that a "movement" is "rising up". In Virginia, voters can vote in either gubernatorial primary, regardless of party affiliation. "I trust his leadership".

Despite all the talk about bipartisanship in the wake of the shooting, Richmond said the game will be very partisan. He joked about his fellow lawmakers' lack of skill, but his mood was subdued, dipping into sadness.

His risk of death is "substantially lower" than it was when he was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, and "I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", Sava said. "Scalise was shot. Everybody's enjoying themselves, but there's a little bit of a pall".

Trump, in a video message played at the game, said the event had "a much deeper level of meaning" because of the shooting.

"Tonight we're all Team Scalise", Pelosi said. We can hopefully all agree that there is nothing more devastating in life than the loss of life - especially when that loss is sudden, cut short, tragic, or at the hands of a deranged person with an assault rifle.

"We just make the phone call and they provide the protection".

Pelosi echoed that conviction: "We will use this occasion as one that will bring us together and not separate us further".

"Yesterday, the Democrats and Russiagate got their first blood count", Caputo said Thursday on Fox Radio's "Kilmeade & Friends".

Senator Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) was one of the congressmen targeted and attacked by crazed "Bernie bro" Wednesday at the practice baseball game in Virginia, but rather than take a break from politics, his political opponent decided it was the ideal time for her own attack. "It's cool that they're putting it on even after the shooting". We are having a bipartisan lunch today. After accepting it gracefully, Barton cracked, "Next year we won't be so nice". David Perdue, R-Ga. "I'd love to do that once a week".

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., suggested something more tactile.

Democrats cautioned against falling into partisanship or laying blame.

The business of the House is resuming a day after a rifle-wielding attacker opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for a charity baseball game.

"Look, unity", he said. In 1928, the game was carried on the radio, a sign of its growing popularity. Unity was the theme of the spirited rivalry; Democrats won in an 11-2 blowout. Barton, a Republican from Texas and the team's manager, joked that his players "wouldn't be this nice next year".
