Congressional staffer Zach Barth was shot in the leg and has since been released from the hospital. Police shot Hodgkinson, who later died.
Breaking from their partisan rancor at least for now, members of Congress from both parties gathered together in prayer around second base as fans chanted "USA, USA", before they took the field.

According to the Daily Beast, a police report from the daughter's friend, Aimee Moreland, said the adopted daughter hated living with Hodkinson and tried to escape countless times. The charges were dismissed later that year, according to the court clerk. "I started yelling at him, 'Hey, stop shooting; there's houses over here".
St. Clair County Sheriff Rick Watson said Wednesday that Hodgkinson showed the deputy all required firearms licenses and documentation for the high-powered hunting rifle, which he said he was simply using for target practice.
